Who requires a Saskatchewan teacher's certificate?

If you would like to teach in Saskatchewan's kindergarten to grade 12 education system, you must hold a Saskatchewan teacher's certificate issued by the Ministry of Education.  Certificates are also required to work in registered independent schools and may also be required by schools operated by First Nations.

How do you apply for a Saskatchewan teacher's certificate?

You need to apply to Teacher Services, Ministry of Education for a certificate by submitting forms and other documentation to us.

The application process is slightly different depending on whether you completed your teacher education program in Saskatchewan, elsewhere in Canada or outside Canada.  Please click on the link below that applies to you for further information.

What are the some of the basic requirements to qualify for a Saskatchewan teacher's certificate?

To qualify for a certificate, you must meet the following basic requirements:

  • a Saskatchewan grade 12 or its equivalent;
  • an approved university degree or its equivalent;
  • at least four years of post-secondary education;
  • completion of an approved teacher education program; and
  • English proficiency or French proficiency (for those who teach in French).

Transcripts and other credentials

This applies only to those applicants who completed secondary school and/or earned a post-secondary degree or credential outside North America.

Beginning October 1, 2010 all foreign secondary and post-secondary transcripts or credentials earned outside of North America must be evaluated by an acceptable evaluation service that will verify the Canadian equivalency of the credits/degrees that you have earned.

World Education Service (WES) is the evaluation service agency acceptable to the certifying official.  A course-by-course evaluation from WES is required by Teacher Services, Ministry of Education.  The evaluation must be sent by WES directly to Teacher Services.
