Student Support Services Personnel Qualifications Policy

The Ministry of Education policy for student support services personnel qualifications is outlined in Children's Services Policy Framework. The policy states that: Student Support Services teachers and professional support staff who are responsible for individual assessments, program planning and program delivery must possess qualifications acceptable to the Minister.

Procedures for assessment of student support services personnel qualifications

1. The Regional Superintendents of Student Support Services adjudicate the qualifications of professional student support services personnel upon formal request of either the school division or the individual.

2. When personnel do not meet the standard of training prescribed above, interim recognition is possible.

2a. A request for interim recognition is submitted by a school division official to the Regional Superintendents of Student Support Services and the request is evaluated on the following:

  • the availability of a qualified person for consultation with or supervision of the applicant; and
  • the applicant's specific plans to complete the university courses necessary for qualification within a five year period from the date of approval.

2b. applicant's prior work-related experience;

2c.  requests for temporary qualification are subject to annual review and renewal.

3. The Personnel Qualifications Committee within the Ministry of Education will adjudicate in special situations.
