The Network Services Unit is responsible for the oversight, coordination, scheduling, and administration of satellite, CommunityNet, and other electronic technologies to support the distribution of educational programming. On average, more than 3,000 registrants from 130 communities participate annually in over 55 televised/multi-mode secondary and post secondary courses delivered via the LIVE Satellite Network. Over 270 classrooms in 200 communities are equipped to participate in programming offered through the satellite network and over 900 schools, school divisions, libraries and regional college offices participate in the CommunityNet infrastructure for the learning sector. Specifically the unit:

  • Works with post-secondary and preK-12 education partners to support development and delivery of courses and learning resources through Internet, CommunityNet, Saskatchewan's LIVE Satellite Network (operated by SCN), and other technologies;
  • Coordinates and provides oversight of CommunityNet and the LIVE Satellite Network technical services and supports;
  • Plans, schedules, and promotes CommunityNet and televised offerings;
  • Administers LIVE Satellite Network and CommunityNet receive sites, televised course development and delivery;
  • Liaises with ITO, SCN, SaskTel, Government Services and other service providers on technical needs and solutions;
  • Researches and tests new and emerging applications and technologies to enhance learning opportunities within the sector;
  • Monitors network usage and performance, and conducts capacity planning and future network requirements;
  • Coordinates and delivers professional development opportunities for system users within both the televised and CommunityNet environments and for K-12 educators involved in the delivery of live televised courses to assist in adapting materials to alternative delivery modes, and incorporating new technologies into the televised classroom.
