The Ministry of Education provides leadership across the PreK-12 education sector to assist educators, education partners, and stakeholders in meeting the needs of students who are new to Saskatchewan and are learning English as an Additional Language.

Ministry personnel work collaboratively with school divisions, intergovernmental agencies, universities, professional associations, partner groups, and community organizations to provide guidance and services that include:
  • Procedures, guidelines, and protocols to support learner achievement
  • Capacity-building for educators, administrators, and school divisions
  • Effective practices in teaching, learning, and assessment of EAL learners
  • Information sharing and support for newcomer families in schools.

EAL Assessment Supports

The EAL Assessment Toolkit has been provided to school divisions to assist in determining the readiness skills of newcomer learners.  The toolkit was prepared through a ministry project involving five partner school divisions:  Regina Public Schools, Regina Catholic Schools, Conceil des écoles fransaskoises, Saskatoon Public Schools and Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools.

EAL Assessment Funding 2015-16

The ministry is pleased to continue supporting school divisions with the initial and ongoing assessment of newcomers through the EAL Assessment Fund.  Similar to last year, school divisions are invited to apply for funding for the following:

  • EAL Initial Assessment Fund: This is per pupil funding based on the number of newcomer students assessed during the 2014-15 school year. The last date for submission of the Expression of Interest form is June 26, 2015.
  • EAL Assessment Project Fund: This is for innovative EAL assessment projects that focus on initial and ongoing assessment processes, language levels, and related needs. The last date for the submission of Expression of Interest form is September 30, 2015.
