The Ministry of Education's Prekindergarten Program is a developmentally-appropriate early childhood education program for three- and four-year-old children. Children who would benefit most from enhanced programming are prioritized for enrolment.
The half-time program requires a qualified teacher and provides programming for 16 children for a minimum of 12 hours per week for 10 months of the year. Programming focuses on holistic child development -- social-emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual development.
This Prekindergarten program was established in 1996 in collaboration with school divisions. At that time, 26 programs were implemented in community schools in North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon. The government currently supports over 230 Prekindergarten programs across the province.
