The Social Sciences Teachers' Institute (SSTI) on Parliamentary Democracy was initiated in 1999. The Institute is an opportunity for teachers to learn about Saskatchewan's unicameral legislative process. Resources in parliamentary democracy have been identified for you. To attend the institute, teachers must register by completing a Registration Form.

As part of this professional development opportunity, teachers are required to develop activities to support the provincial Social Sciences curricula. In cooperation with the Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN), a computer lab will be provided for teachers.

The objectives of the SSTI are:

  • To enable Social Studies teachers to better understand the system of parliamentary democracy by observing our provincial system in operation.
  • To increase accuracy and realism in the teaching of government and politics.
  • To facilitate the development of new educational materials on the topic of "parliamentary democracy".
  • To provide opportunities for teachers to have first-hand discussions with those who determine the political agenda for Government and Opposition Caucuses.
  • To give teachers insight by contrasting events of the day and the manner in which they are subsequently portrayed in the media.
  • To stimulate thinking about realities of democracy and its importance in our society.
  • Participants can expect to develop a deeper appreciation of the privilege of being citizens of Saskatchewan and Canada.
